Human rights depend on a healthy biosphere

In the present report, the Special Rapporteur on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment, David R. Boyd, discusses the need for urgent action to conserve, protect and restore the biosphere on which all species depend, including Homo sapiens. He illustrates the devastating effects of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the global nature emergency on the enjoyment of human rights, and the crucial role of human rights in catalyzing action to safeguard nature. The Special Rapporteur clarifies the obligations of States and the responsibilities of businesses and civil society organizations and makes practical recommendations to conserve, protect and restore healthy ecosystems and biodiversity, ensure sustainable use and distribute the benefits of nature equitably. He emphasizes that healthy ecosystems and biodiversity are vital elements of the right to a healthy environment.
